Newer research reinforces the same pattern rather than replacing it. In a randomized controlled habit study, successful habit-formers reached peak automaticity in a median of 59 days, and repeated plan enactment was a key predictor of success Keller et al., 2021. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis then pooled 20 studies with 2,601 participants and found that habit-formation timelines clustered around medians of 59 to 66 days, while more complex behaviors often took longer Singh et al., 2024. The authors also noted that 11 of the 20 included studies had a high risk of bias, so these numbers work better as ranges than promises.

Why the 21-day habit rule is a myth
The “21-day rule” is commonly linked to plastic surgeon Maxwell Maltz's observations in his 1960 book Psycho-Cybernetics. He described patients taking at least about 21 days to adjust to changes. That observation was later simplified into a claim that any habit forms in 21 days.
It was not a controlled habit-formation result. Both the UCL study and a 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis show a longer and more variable process. The review found reported medians of 59 to 66 days and means of 106 to 154 days across health behaviours, with substantial individual variation.
